Digital Radiographs

Digital radiographs provide imaging of both bone structure and soft tissue. Radiographs are often necessary, either in an emergency situation, or sometimes as part of diagnostics during a regular veterinary visit. At Pathways Animal Hospital, we use digital radiography because it is superior to film-based radiography in many ways. To begin with, this updated technology gives us the capability of communicating with other clinics in a convenient and timely manner.

What is Digital Radiology?

Digital radiology is an imaging modality that creates a radiographic image without the use of film. Besides convenience, some of the advantages of this technology include:

Improved imaging latitude and quality
Less need for retaking images
Access to teleradiology

This advanced digital imaging eliminates the need for film or plates, a tremendous advantage. The image is available within seconds of exposure. Consequently, the technician can look up at the monitor to immediately assess the need to reposition the pet for more takes, or not. Though film based radiography is normally high in quality, we have found that the quality of our digital images exceeds that of much of the film we’ve evaluated. Add to that the fact that film based imaging can be time consuming. With digital technology, software can be used to correct exposures, rather than having to keep the pet waiting in case there’s a need to retake images should they not be clear enough. The images can be sent electronically to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals for clearances. In conclusion, the quality and convenience of digital radiology is second to none.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a non-invasive procedure which employs high-frequency sound waves to view internal organs and structures for diagnostic purposes. It can also be used to guide internal biopsies and needle guided aspirations. This allows the veterinarian to obtain samples without using the more invasive method of a surgical procedure. There’s also the added benefit of performing ultrasound biopsies and needle aspirations in the office. Other uses for ultrasound technology are:

Cardiac screenings through the use of Color Echo Doppler
Feline lower urinary tract diagnosis
And early confirmation of pregnancy
